Free tax preparation assistance is offered by STEP, Inc. to eligible taxpayers at two locations. Beginning February 5, 2018 help will be available at the Rocky Mount office at 200 Dent Street each Monday and Thursday. Starting January 16, 2018 assistance is available at the Patrick County Public Library in Stuart on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
This service is available through STEP’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to taxpayers earning $54,000 or less and will available through April 13. Taxpayers do not necessarily have to live in either Franklin or Patrick counties to receive assistance, however everyone should call to make appointments before arriving. In Rocky Mount, call 540-483-5142 and in Stuart call 276-694-2239.
VITA is an IRS sponsored program aimed at helping lower income individuals get the earned income credit they are entitled to. STEP offers the assistance each year with the help of volunteers who are trained specifically for the job. Those who want to prepare their tax returns need to bring a picture ID, social security cards for all tax payers and dependents, and all tax related documents such as W-2. They should also bring a copy of their last year’s tax return if possible.
Those who take advantage of this service can save up to $200 in tax preparation fees. Last year, STEP helped residents in Franklin and Patrick counties save an estimated $121,000 in tax preparation fees and find almost $800,000 in federal tax refunds.
