Here at STEP, we recognize that safety is an issue every day of the month, every month of the year. After all, we have been entrusted with the health and well-being of our Head Start/Early Head Start children and our students in LIFES Academy for a large part of the day, five days a week. Our Meals on Wheels program provides sustenance in the form of nutritious meals to home-bound seniors, and we know from experience that our staff serve as a safety net for seniors who can’t get out of the house and have limited resources. We work hard to offer opportunities for the homeless to find safe shelter, and for returning citizens to re-enter society in a secure and productive manner. Even our weatherization and housing clients find enhanced stability when their homes are protected from the elements.
Now we find ourselves faced with an issue that could one day become a safety challenge. Our 41 year old Rocky Mount facility needs a new roof. As with many older buildings constructed years ago, ours has a flat membrane roof that is showing its age. We have repaired numerous leaks over the years, but patches are temporary and it is time now to replace that old roof with a new one. Cost estimates have ranged upwards of $200,000.
As a nonprofit that relies on grant monies in addition to federal and state funding, the lion’s share of our financial resources are earmarked for the above-mentioned services. We must turn to the generosity of our friends and neighbors for help to pay for this much needed construction. The safety of our clients and staff may soon depend upon it. The very least we can do is put a roof over their heads. Won’t you help?
