VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance)

STEP provides free tax preparation services for families and individuals earning less than $54,000 annually. Trained and certified volunteers prepare most standard IRS documents (i.e. 1040, 1040EZ and 1040A) and submit all returns electronically. Volunteers help clients take advantage of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit, and more.

We offer assistance at the STEP offices in Rocky Mount and Stuart beginning in January and ending in April. All of these services are free, which means you get to keep more of your money! STEP’s VITA program saves our clients an average of $200 in tax preparation fees each year. That means that last year, our clients collectively saved more than $120,000 in fees!

IDA (Individual Development Account)

IDA is a savings program for qualified individuals who are seeking to:

  • Purchase a home
  • Start a business
  • Enroll in higher education

For every $1 saved, $8 is matched (as long as funds are available). Savers must save a minimum $25 per month and must enroll and attend two helpful financial education courses.

To see if you qualify and get started, contact STEP Financial Services or The United Way of Henry County/Martinsville at 276-638-3946.

Financial Education

We provide financial literacy programs designed to increase awareness about personal and business finances, developing and maintaining personal and family budgets, saving money, banking, interest rates and more. The objectives of these programs include helping our friends and neighbors:

  • Establish and/or increase their personal savings
  • Increase their understanding of financial matters affecting them
  • Decrease or even eliminate their debt
  • Become personally invested in their own financial future

We also partner with Money Management International and other local professionals in the finance industry to provide a variety of education workshops held throughout the year.

Responsible - Rides Sometimes having a car is critical to holding down a job. STEP partners with other providers to promote ownership and accountability through the Responsible Rides program.
